Last night, myself and Steve from our band were lucky enough to get a look in at Highbury Studio just round the corner from where we live in Birmingham. Our drummer first heard about it, and word of mouth seems to be the only way anyone finds out about it. Stepping through the doors of the old cricket bat factory is like stepping back to the 1980′s. The decor is something that can’t be copied or styled, it’s just matured over the time it has been there.

The studio used to be owned by UB40 producer Bob Lamb but was brought by Birmingham music scene legend John Mostyn just over a year ago. It seems they don’t have any wild aspirations to change things, which is what keeps this place so nice. Most of the equipment is original so the recordings sound warm and full of character.

I only snapped a few pics but we will most likely be going back there to rehearse and maybe record so I’ll be sure to take a wider angle lens to capture this beautiful space.

Eat Y’Self Pretty @ HMV Institute

My band Eat Y’Self Pretty are playing at the HMV Institute in Birmingham on the 23rd December supporting Paper Shapes and Venkman. Should be a really good night as most people break up from work on that day. See below for a little music taster. TRON: Legacy

I’m very excited about this movie, apparently for Avatar they used 3 cameras for the 3D and that looked pretty crisp. In Tron:Legacy they used up to 10 cameras, I think this is going to push 3D to the next level.

This short documentary focuses on the sound design for Tron. I’ve just booked my tickets to go see this at the IMAX. Pretty excited!

A Busy Week…

I’ve never written anything about my band before. But this week has been really busy, we have spent about 10 hours recording and played a great gig last night supporting Tellison and Kytes. Someone took a couple of videos and I took a few photo’s in the studio, so I thought I would post them here.

Birthday trip to Wales

At the start of may a group of us went to Wales for my friend Tom’s 25th Birthday, I’ve been meaning to edit the footage together for ages and finally got round to it this weekend. I’ve never edited or colour corrected anything in final cut pro before. I found once I got the basics, it wasn’t too difficult to achieve what I wanted.

I can’t wait to make the next one, i’ll shoot a lot more footage for it. I’ve certainly got my eye on a 7D.

NinosKika at The Poly

I recently finished building a website for a band called NinosKika. They are good friends of mine and recently kicked off their tour at the poly in Falmouth. It was a beautiful, intimate homecoming gig with a great audience. I took a few videos of some of the songs. If you ever get the chance to see this band, you should definitely take it.

RIP Muxtape

Justin from muxtape has written on the muxtape home page his experience of dealing with the RIAA and the record industry giants.

“Around the same time I got a call from the VP of anti-piracy at one of the majors. After I picked up the phone his first words were, “Justin, I just have one question for you: where do I send the summons and complaint?” The conversation picked up from there. There was no summons, it was an intimidation tactic setting the tone for the business development meeting he was proposing, the true reason for the call. Around the same time another one of the big four’s business developers reached out to me, too.

It’s a really interesting read that comes straight from the heart. The great news is that this isn’t the end of muxtape and it will support smaller bands looking for their break. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of muxtape and will be recommending all my friends bands to sign up to it. I’m confident that this will be really, really good!
